I installed SS and now many internet sites cannot be reached?

I installed SS last night on my WinXP Pro machine and worked through the first 2 tutorials without problems. Thought "Wow! This is just what I need!" This morning though I was unable to access several sites (Yahoo, etc...). It seems that SS made modifications to my internet connection that I cannot undo. Some sites work and some time out. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason but it is consistent. It's as if the SS proxy server installed some wierd layer that is blocking certain IP addresses. It has definitely slowed down my access time to others as well. Checked with ISP and my cable modem is working fine. Also I turned off my firewall and no joy. Actually cannot get FTP access at all... This is a real problem.

I uninstalled SS but this helped not at all. Is SS possibly still somewhere on the system running as a service? Has anyone else reported a similar wierdness?

Please help because I desperately need to access several sites that are now timing out for my job.

still no love!

Thanks for the feedback, but it just wasn't the problem. I had reconfigured my browser for direct connection after finishing the second tutorial and before going to bed. It was the next morning when I discovered that there were some sites I could access and some I could not.

The problem may lie in security settings. I noticed when I installed SS there were some .jar files and other Java-looking-kinda files being installed. Does this possibly make changes to security settings for Java?

Aside from issues with forgeting to turn off the proxy or reconfigure the browser connection, are there other instances where something similar has happened?

For all I know this is unrelated to SS, I just can't think of anything I've done since there was no problem and now there is.

BTW: Thanks for the link to the tool area; but, case in point. I attempted to download the IE 7 browser add-on, went to the page alright but the download will not start.

What kind of errors?

Does your browser tell you any particular kind of error that is occuring? Like.. "Host unreachable", or "Connectionn refused/denied", etc, etc?

I can't think of any other instances that have been brought to our attention about people with this kind of problem.

You said that you can get to the site okay, but that you can't actually download the file? So some sites are reachable, but others are not... Are there any consistencies in the kinds of sites that you can/can't reach?

Yeah, one of the things I

Yeah, one of the things I forget to do sometimes is to disable the proxy server that Tutorial 1 made you set up. SS requires the Proxy to be set up in the browser, but if SS in not running, then your settings in your browser can't find a way out to the internet.

In the end, the problem isn't a screen-scraper error, it's simply that the Proxy needs to be disabled again when you don't want to be using screen-scraper through it.

You can safely reinstall screen-scraper. :)

Enabling/disabling the proxy in your browser can be a pain, but we've assembled a few tools to you help make that process much much simpler. For instance, you can place an easy on/off switch in your browser's status bar. Just check out the following page:

Hope that helps!
